Project Case Study

Their original website was created using the old Flash based GoDaddy Website Builder. It worked well for them for years. However, when Flash became deprecated, the old Flash based GoDaddy site builder stopped working for thousands of customers across the world. In October 2020, they found me, and I took the project on.

To replace the GoDaddy Site Builder Website, I created a custom WordPress website which allows them to log in and update their own movie listings and other areas of the site with no programming knowledge needed.

They wanted to stick very close to the original color scheme and layout of the website. I managed to stay true to their original website design and feel while updating the functionality quite a bit. The client logged in each week and updated the movies and information, and was happy with the site and functionality.

This first portion of the project took me approximately 40 hours to complete.

Now, flash forward to March 20, 2022. Originally, the focus had been on saving the website information, pictures, etc, before the GoDaddy Site Builder became inaccessible, and updating the functionality in the process.

Now that I had been managing the site for a while and had a bit more of an understanding of the business, I wanted to re-design it from the ground up with my own flare and style. I had already gotten the owner’s approval to start doing so at any time, and had confirmed the color scheme and other details that he knew he wanted his site to have. He sent me a bunch of updated pictures for the website, and I got to work creating a new design and adding new pages.

Previously, the owner had tended to post all of the theatre’s important information on facebook because it was easier to use than his old GoDaddy Site Builder had been. I combed through his facebook page to get all of his pictures, information, and other updates over the past several years and incorporated those things into the design and the copy that I wrote.

In addition to completely re-designing every page of the site from the ground up and adding content, I also told the owner about an idea I had for merchandising his brand. He liked the idea, so I created an official Mariner Theatre Spreadshop. This allows the owner, and the theatre’s supporters, to buy merchandise with his official logo on it. The merchandise can be customized by him, or by the customer. It’s a great way for people to support a small business. It took me about 6 hours to create the shop, integrate it with his website, design the shop to match his website colors, and then customize 130+ products with his official logo on them

Over the next week, I went over the site again and looked for ways I could improve the layout, design, and functionality of the site. I changed the way that the Now Showing and Coming Soon titles are displayed around the site, and added movie trailers into the individual listings for shows. I really tried to see it through the eyes of the customer, and to focus on what they would want to know, see, and click on.

In the course of 4 days, I spent approximately 30 hours working on this re-design and restructuring project. And then over the course of the next week, I spent another 10 hours on making changes, training the client via telephone on how to use the new features, and double checking and tweaking my work on both the desktop and my mobile phone.

The client likes the new design! And so do I. This project is a success!

About a week later, the client called me and asked if I was able to help with a problem that is unrelated to their website. While they have a robust ticketing solution that they love for selling movie tickets online, that solution is not equipped to help them sell “Extras” like their Make and Take your own Stuffed Animal event, or their Make and Take your own Blanket event.

I directed him to my WooCommerce Shopping Cart Add-On for Existing WordPress Website product and explained it to him. He was sold! So on April 9, 2022, we upgraded his website to be Ecommerce enabled. Now, when the theatre has special events and wants to sell add-ons for those events, they can do it via their website!

Before we even announced that the new shopping cart was live, we had our first sale. And judging by the response his site got, this upgrade is already a big hit with not only my client, but with his customers as well.
